The Value of Appreciation

William James, American psychologist and philosopher said: “The deepest principle of human nature is a craving to be appreciated.” It exists in our core.

The value of appreciation can not be understated. It:

  1. Helps us reinforce a positive sense of self-worth.
  2. Is a way to feel that we’re important to others; that we’ve made a difference in some way.
  3. Is contagious. When we feel like we are being valued, it’s easier to think about and voice how others are adding value.
  4. Helps us sleep at night. A recent study showed that people who kept a gratitude journal slept ~30 minutes more per night, woke up feeling more rejuvenated, and had an easier time staying awake during the day compared to those who didn’t.

So let’s make sure we are being thankful more than just one day a year in November. Who will you say Mahalo to today?
